Goodyear Automotive Belts, Hoses, and Uses
Exposure to heat, vibration, contamination makes automotive belts and automotive hoses wear out faster. That is why regular inspections are so important. Here are the belt and hose types in your car, along with their applications.
Car Drive Belts
Accessories can be electrically powered by the charging system, others by use of the engine. Some car drive belts are have automatic tensioners and some are constantly fixed. Automotive belts come in various shapes and sizes. Most common is the Serpentine Belt. Serpentine belts may last up to 140,000 miles before replacement. There is also timing belts that may not be readily seen and are hidden under engine covers. These belts may require more frequent service. Check your car manual for recommended service schedule or regular service schedule. It may be critical to service the timing belt or severe engine damage may occur. Automotive belts are sensitive to oil, grease and or coolant. These contaminates may shorten the life of the belt. Furthermore, these contaminates may cause Belt Squeel. The power for these accessories is delivered by a system of pulleys and belts. Examples of these car accessories or belt applications are:
- Alternator
- Water Pump for engine cooling
- Power Steering Pump
- Air Conditioning Compressor
- Radiator Cooling Fan
- Use of a single serpentine belt in place of individual belts.
- Camshaft or Camshafts
Car Hoses
The hoses that transfer fluids are made of two rubber layers that surrounds a layer of fabric. Car hoses may molded or preformed to fit various shapes. Hoses that are swollen or soft may need replacement. Typical hoses include:
- Radiator and Heater Hoses - These hoses carry coolant to the engine and heater core.
- Fuel Hose - As the name implies, this hose transports gasoline from the tank to the engine.
- Power Steering Hose - It connects the power steering pump to the steering gear.
